In the family of certifications, two macro categories can be distinguished: system certifications and product certifications.

The substantial difference between system and product could be summarized in the following concept: the product is the result of the system process. The truth is that one is obviously connected to the other.

We define product and system certification

From the glossary of Accredia (Italian accreditation body) we report the following definitions:

Product certification (regulated by sectoral, generic and specific product standards or by equivalent regulatory references) is a form of direct insurance, which ensures compliance with the applicable requirements of a tangible or intangible product (service), understood as result of a process.

System certification ensures the ability of an organization (producer of goods or supplier of services) to structure itself and manage its resources and production processes in such a way as to recognize and satisfy customer needs, committing itself to continuous improvement. It is a form of indirect insurance and concerns quality management systems (regulated by the ISO 9001 standard); environmental (ISO 14001); for health and safety at work (ISO 45001); for information security (ISO 27001); for food safety (ISO 22000).

The output is the certificate or declaration of conformity – which refers only to the object of the certification (purpose and field of application of the standard) – it is issued on the basis of sample checks and certifies that the organization is able to satisfy and maintain the requirements over time, as well as adopt effective corrective and/or preventive actions.

Why get certified

Obtaining the certificate is not always the ultimate goal (although very often it is the first) that moves a company to certify its system or product.

Many times what convinces companies to start the certification process is the direct request from the customer or the need to participate in tenders aimed at entering the supplier list of other companies.

It happens that, by setting up the management of a company system, it is discovered that the benefit involves the entire company and its resources (economic, human, structural, organizational etc.).

In reality, we always hope that the more or less voluntary choice of a company towards these certifications will lead to the implementation of an efficient management system: a guarantee of reliability for customers, suppliers, employees and collaborators.
